Promoting physical activity for older people: a WHO toolkit for action

17 October 2023
This ACTIVE toolkit provides evidence-based guidance on the key approaches to promote and enable older people to be physically active, regardless of who they are, where they live, or their intrinsic capacities (for example their visual or cognitive abilities) or whether they live with chronic conditions (for example, diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis). It is designed to support all countries at national and subnational levels (particularly low- and middle-income countries with limited resources) to ensure that environments and settings support older people to be active, and that they provide physical activity services and programmes tailored to the needs, preferences and goals of all older people. WHO evidence and gap map on in-person interventions for reducing social isolation and loneliness (all ages)

30 July 2023
Evidence and gap maps are interactive tools that help researchers and decision makers discover existing evidence on a given topic, find solutions supported by evidence, and identify gaps in the evidence where more research is required. The World Health Organization is developing evidence and gap maps as part of a multi-year project to summarise, disseminate, and increase uptake of evidence towards deeper integration in policies and practices during the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing. This evidence and gap map examines the evidence on in-person interventions for reducing social isolation and loneliness across all ages, including older people. More

Participatory video for meaningful engagement of older people: a toolkit

1 March 2023
This toolkit by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows how the process known as “participatory video” (PV) can be used to ensure meaningful engagement of older people and contribute to the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030). The aim of this toolkit is to provide people working to implement the Decade with practical ways to understand and use the methods in the PV process for meaningful engagement of older people, to amplify their voices and foster healthy ageing everywhere. The toolkit sets out steps in planning, preparing, equipping, facilitating and managing PV, including obtaining consent and use of the films for dialogue with decision-makers and for wider advocacy. This toolkit is based on the approach, methods and experience of a pilot PV Voice project conducted by WHO for the Decade during 2020–2021 in which case studies were conducted in communities in three countries: Canada, Jordan and Togo. Adult Vaccination Advocacy Toolkit – AVAT

7 October 2022
Vaccination is a simple, safe, and effective way of protecting people against harmful infectious diseases and is a key component of healthy ageing. Yet globally, rates of adult vaccination are suboptimal. The Adult Vaccination Advocacy Toolkit by the International Federation on Ageing responds to an urgent call from stakeholders and advocacy groups to influence and shape adult vaccination policy. The Toolkit is a collection of authoritative and adaptable resources designed around four key policy issues: vaccine pathways, expansion of the pool of vaccine administrators, effective targeted adult vaccination campaigns, and an environment that strives for vaccination equality. The toolkit contains four policy drivers that are universally essential for improving adult vaccination coverage: 1. Simplification of vaccination pathways; 2. Expansion of vaccination administrators; 3. Targeted vaccination campaign; and 4. Vaccination equity. In the toolkit, each policy issue contains: 1. Context and scenarios that illustrate the barriers to accessing adult vaccination; 2. Links to useful tools and resources; and 3. Actions for advocacy and knowledge assets. More

Bringing generations together for change

19 September 2022
A society for all ages is one where older and younger generations live in harmony together. For this reason, HelpAge International promotes initiatives that bring together older and younger people to work on activities that encourage cross-generational bonding, and address issues affecting them and their community. This guide, produced in collaboration with Restless Development and partners, captures key principles and practical steps to inspire effective intergenerational action. The learning is drawn from initiatives where two or more generations have come together for mutual benefit and to promote greater communication, understanding, and respect. The guide gathers 10 case studies that offer learning about what it’s possible to achieve by bringing generations together for change. It looks at the wider experience of organisations that use an intergenerational approach in their work to address challenges common to different age groups. It also highlights gaps in knowledge and analysis that give rise to new questions. More

Let's go! Steps for engaging older people and improving communities for all ages

27 July 2022
Most age-friendly community initiatives have taken place in middle or higher income communities, and many lower-income communities lack the resources or ability to make this commitment. Yet, individuals and small groups of people in communities around the world are taking meaningful actions to make their communities better support themselves and their neighbors as they age. And innovations come in all shapes and in small and large sizes. So we need to provide support for and to learn from the creativity and innovation that is happening everywhere across the globe. AARP, HelpAge International and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) created this toolkit for low- and no-cost age-friendly interventions in order to help communities begin or advance their age-friendly journey—starting wherever they are. We hope it will inspire communities everywhere to take some initial, often small yet important actions that can show impact, build momentum, and drive a desire and commitment to do more—perhaps someday even join the Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities. UNECE Expert Workshop on Mainstreaming Ageing

1 September 2023
Supporting the implementation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's Guidelines for Mainstreaming Ageing, this expert workshop format consists of a half-day (in person or online) to discuss with national experts and stakeholders how ageing issues can be mainstreamed across government policy. Central to mainstreaming ageing are, on the one hand, age-sensitive research and the involvement of all actors and, and on the other hand, cross-sectoral coordination and cooperation as well as alignment with international policy frameworks. The workshop introduces the concept and methods of mainstreaming ageing, and draws on lessons learnt from gender mainstreaming to stimulate a discussion on whether a similar approach may be used to include the dimension of ‘ageing’ in all policy areas. This format was successfully tested at a workshop in Germany. More
