Claire Choo

Claire Choo is a professor in social epidemiology and biostatistics in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Universiti Malaya. Her research interests include the international public health burden of violence especially on children, women and older people; investigating the linkages between violence against children/adolescents/older people and mental health; the development and evaluation of interventions to address violence; research on the victimization of children using information and communication audio-visual technology and exposure to social media such as cyberbullying, sexual and physical victimization; and the application of the mixed methodology in public health research. Her current projects include determining the magnitude and social determinants of elder abuse (EAN) among the community and institutionalized older adults; examine effects of educational intervention on management of EAN among healthcare providers; review the effectiveness of interventions on EAN; estimating the magnitude of abuse among primary school children; exploring the awareness and communication practice of parents of primary school children on sexual abuse, determine the exposure to risk and victimisation using ICTs among adolescents and the association between domestic violence with psychiatric morbidity and victims’ readiness to leave. Christopher Mikton

Christopher Mikton’s areas of responsibility within WHO's Demographic Change and Healthy Ageing Unit (DHA) cover the abuse of older people, social isolation and loneliness, ageism and the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing “enabler” of data, research and innovation. Christopher Mikton is a dual Swiss and American national. Before joining DHA, he worked as a Technical Officer for 8.5 years in WHO's Prevention of Violence Unit (where one of his areas of responsibility was abuse of older people). He has also worked in academia in the UK and a clinical scientist for the United Kingdom's Ministry of Justice and Department of Health's Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder Programme, as well as for the International Committee of the Red Cross. He was educated at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom (PhD and MPhil) and McGill University in Montreal, Canada (BA). More

Christelle Kafando

Christelle Sibdou Liliane Kafando holds a master's degree in sociology from Joseph Ki-Zerbo University in Ouagadougou. She specializes in gender, sexual and reproductive health, as well as the fight against sexual violence. During her career she has been involved in several research and development projects. Since March 2023, she has held the position of Field Coordinator at l’Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population at l’Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo for the project “Misoprostol and the reduction of maternal mortality in Burkina Faso and Senegal ", in partnership with Brandeis University in the United States and Cheick Anta Diop University in Senegal. Previously, she has held positions such as Qualitative Research Manager, project manager for various projects related to sexual and reproductive health and the fight against gender-based violence, as well roles as consultant and research assistant in studies of maternal health and family planning. She has also been involved in research projects on the rights of older people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Christelle is a committed young researcher. She continues to work to advance social research in Burkina Faso and beyond. More

Aresya Farzana Mohammad Ismail

Aresya contributes to the Intervention Accelerator: Abuse for Older People project (IA-AOP) by providing support on data extraction and data management tasks for systematic reviews. As the IA-AOP project progresses in identifying interventions ready for evaluation, she is involved in tailoring the Systematic Screening and Assessment Method to align with the project's current needs. Prior to her work in IA-AOP, she interned at Universiti Malaya contributing to a qualitative project examining the Malaysian perspective on ageism and its impact on the healthcare system. More

Fatemeh Estebsari

Dr Fatemeh Estebsari holds a PhD in Health Education and Promotion from Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), Tehran, Iran. Her interests include healthy ageing, age-friendly cities, lifestyles of older people, the prevention of abuse for older people, and the design, evaluation, and measurement of interventions to prevent of abuse of older people. She has been working as an Assistant Professor for more than 10 years. Dr Fatemeh Estebsari works with international organizations on older people's issues, such as the World Health Organization, and contributes to the (IA-AOP) project: Intervention Accelerator - Abuse for Older People. She also works with national organizations such as the Ministry of Health in Iran. More

George Rouamba

Holder of a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Bordeaux in France. He also holds a Master's degree in Innovations, Development and Societies obtained at 2IE (Burkina Faso) and a Master's degree in Sociology and Education Sciences. He is a teacher-researcher at the University Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Burkina Faso. His research and publications focus on ageing, health systems and policies, gender-based violence (abuse and accusations of witchcraft). More

Laura Campo Tena

Laura holds a PhD in Criminology from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Mental Health from Queen Mary University of London. She has worked as a violence prevention researcher for over six years. Since 2020, Laura has collaborated with the Demographic Change and Healthy Ageing Unit at WHO, contributing to specific projects like the Global Report on Ageism. Currently, she coordinates a WHO-led initiative aimed at accelerating the development of effective interventions for abuse of older people across low-, middle-, and high-income countries. Laura also collaborates with the Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research at WHO, contributing to the advancement of knowledge on violence against women. More
